"It's not about the boat"

The International Optimist Dinghy is currently raced by more than 150,000 sailors in over 110 countries worldwide. Did you know that more than two thirds of the medal winning sailors at the last two Olympic Games, and over 85% of the medal winning skippers at the Beijing Olympics were former Optimist sailors?

That's why they say Optimists are the bathtubs that breed champions.

"I woke up one Christmas morning to find an Optimist dinghy beside my bed. I've been sailing mad ever since"......Ben Ainslie (Gold Medalist)

"In Optimists you train together as a team to develop your skills, and build your character".....Victor Kovalenko (Australian Olympic Coach)

 Welcome to the NSWIODA website
"You haven't won anything if in winning you lose the respect of the other competitors"
Paul Elvstrom...Gold medalist

NEWS FROM IODA........NO OCEANIA CHAMPIONSHIPS IN 2011
News from IODA this week is that it will not be sanctioning the 2011 Oceania Championships which were to be run in conjunction with the Australian Championships next January, basing it's decision on a lack of agreement with AIODA on the format of the event. While this is very disappointing for AIODA and contrary to all the indications given by IODA's representatives at Adelaide last January, planning for the Australian Championships is progressing well with the Organising Committee still expecting a lot of interest from international competitors.
CANBERRA SAILOR MAKES INTERNATIONAL DEBUT
Its great to see that even during a Federal Election campaign the Canberra press will give some column space to support a local young sporting talent. We were thrilled to see that Chris Phillips has the support of his local community for his upcoming trip to Kenya and the 2010 IODA African Championships. Chris will be Australia's only competitor in Kenya and we'll be trying to cover his progress throughout the event. In the meantime if you would like to read the newspaper article, click on the headline and follow the links.
HOLD YOUR LANE..........EXECUTE YOUR STRATEGY
An essential skill in every successful sailor's arsenal is an ability to start in the front row and maintain a lane of clear air. The longer you can 'live' in the front row the better the chances of executing your race strategy. During training Jim and Brodie spent many hours practising this, and it was one reason why Jim was well placed at the first mark in nearly every race during the Queensland Youth Week . The TP52s racing in the Audi Med Cup graphically demonstrate why its such an important skill. Click on the headline for a link to the video.
HAKUNA MATATA........CHRIS IS OFF TO AFRICA
When the overnight temperatures in Canberra dropped to minus 4 degrees the decision to head to Kenya for the 2010 African Championships became easy for Chris Phillips. Chris has been one of the most improved sailors in NSW over the last six months and the African Championships will add significantly to his big regatta experience leading into the Australian summer season. Chris's dad Leslie has promised to send reports when they can, and we'll post them on the NSW website. There is also an excellent event website where you can follow Chris's results. Click on the headline for the link.....by the way it means 'no worries'.
QUEENSLAND YOUTH WEEK..........SERIES RESULTS
NSW sailors Jim Colley and Caitlin Tames wrapped up the Optimist Open and Girl's Division at the Queensland Youth Week today. With 2,3 results in the final two races, Jim finished with a comfortable 7 point margin over Zac O'connell and Rhett Gowans who were tied after ten races, Zac finishing 2nd on countback. 2010 EAST COAST CHAMPIONSHIPS........PHOTOS BY FRANCO MARINELLI
David Eastwood has generously provided access to a slide show of photos taken by Franco Marinelli during the East Coast Championships at Woollahra over the long weekend. High resolution versions are available if anyone wants them but please, no commercial use of any of these photos without prior permission from Franco. There are lots of nice shots of kids having fun in boats and David's email was a timely reminder that there may be a better way to measure the success of a junior class than by regatta results alone. Click on the headline for a link to the album.
2010 EAST COAST CHAMPIONSHIPS.........RESULTS NOW POSTED
The 2010 East Coast Championships was won by Klaus Lorenz (Qld) from Kyle O'Connell (Qld) and Brodie Crossman (NSW), in perfect winter conditions. A highlight of the weekend was the remarkable improvement in a number of NSW sailors, Alec Brodie, Chris Phillips and Sarah Beavan to name three. The regatta also saw the much anticipated launch of McConaghy's M1 Optimists, 3rd and 4th place overall was a pleasing first up result for them too. Results have now been be posted, click on the headline and follow the prompts or go to 'Results' on the main menu. NSWIODA would like to thank Woollahra SC, Gill, OziOpti and McConaghy Boats for their support of another very successful mid winter event.
